Issues We are Following: Brandon Road Held Up

construction equipment, boats and other vehicles are in or near the water on the Brandon Road Interbasin project.

The Brandon Road Interbasin Project has come to a halt. An administrative audit is holding up the money. The job site looks abandoned. Four US Senators and two governors sent a letter requesting release of the funds necessary to continue the construction of the lock designed to prevent invasive carp fish from gaining access to the Great Lakes. These funds were already authorized by Congress.

“We write to express concern over the administrative review and pause of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project (BRIP). Moving this project forward is critical to protecting the Great Lakes from invasive carp. It has been thoroughly reviewed by Congress, the Army Corps of Engineers, and local partners, and its funding has been authorized and approved by Congress. The current review could cause delays that put the Great Lakes ecosystem and fishing industry at risk,” the senators wrote.

Brandon Road Project stalled in fall 2025.

$225 million of congressionally approved funding for BRIP from 2022, and another $47 million approved in 2023 are currently on hold for administrative review. President Donald Trump expressed support for the project in May of 2025, issuing a memorandum in support of preventing the spread of invasive carp.
